If you are like me, you think of the Caribbean as a warm, delightful place for cruises. But that isn't always the case. During Hurricane Season, the storms can get very dangerous and violent. This time, at least 13 people have been killed in flooding in the Dominican Republic following torrential rains dumped by tropical Storm Noel. By early Monday evening, the center of the storm had passed and was heading northwest, past the eastern tip of Cuba towards the Bahamas. I think I will just stick to the midwest and take my chances with a tornado or two and I hope I never see one of those here either.

Terror Training Video Seen b Jury in UK

Footage that allegedly shows a group of men practicing military-style techniques in New Forest terror training camp in the UK, has been seen by a jury. Pizza Night

Tomorrow is Pizza Night. We look forward to going to the Pizza Ranch almost every Tuesday night. They have cheese sticks and sauce and at least 3 or 4 kinds of pizza, plus cactus bread (the dessert pizza) We have learned that if we ask when we come into the restaurant and ask for apple or peach cactus bread, they will make one that is half fruit and half plain. The fruit ones are really good. The have a great salad bar too, plus more hot foods like mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable, broasted chicken and potatoes and chicken fingers. Yum Yum. Boy, this making doctor appointments gets to be a regular job. You have the dental appointment. Eye appointments and eye,ear,nose & throat are some more. Then there are PSA, Dr. of Urology, regular 6 months checkups. The Veterans call you and set up more appointments for them to they you out so you can get some prescriptions from them much cheaper than the drug store.And of course, there is the dermatologist too that has to be set up every 6 months. It becomes a regular coordinators job to coordinate all the appointments.

Boy or Girl?

What is the new baby going to be, a boy or a girl? We are all taking guesses. Our son-in-law and daughter are expecting 2 grandchildren at the same time and they will be first time grandparents at the same time too. That is because they have twins, a boy and a girl and both sets of parents are expecting babies this weekend. We haven't heard any news yet and it is getting very exciting. They will be traveling to Minnesota when this baby arrives and we don't know what it will be. The other baby is in Texas and is to be a little boy. Wow!

Babies are really exciting especially if you are waiting for them to arrive and they are both due now and you haven't heard anything yet. No one has gone into labor and we are expecting 2 great grandchildren right now. One was due yesterday and one today. But today is over with yet so who knows. Explosive Devices Thrown at Mexican Consulate

The Mexican consulate in central New York had to be evacuated because two explosive devices were apparently thrown at it. They found fragments of one of the devices in front of the building in midtown Manhattan. So far no injuries have been reported and the consulate would only confirm that there had not been an explosion. The New York Police Department is handling the ongoing investigation.

Fatal Attack on Pakistan Troops

At least 18 Pakistani soldiers have been killed in an attack on an army vehicle in the northern region of Swat. The attack comes one day after the army deployed 2500 more troops in the area to combat rising militancy. Some civilians are reported to be among the dead. More than 35 people were taken to the hospital for treatment. The Swat valley in North West Frontier Province has become a stronghold of an anti-government militant leader, Maulana Fazullah. Turkish Parliament Approves Possible Attack

Parliament authorized the government Wednesday to send troops into northern Iraq to root out Kurdish rebels who have been conducting raids into Turkey. Children Find Body in Suitcase

Colombia Mine Collapse Kills 24

At least 24 amateur gold prospectors have been killed in a mine collapse in southwest Colombia. Some 18 people were injured and another 10 estimated to be missing after the accident near the town of Suarez, about 220 miles from Bogota. Local residents were mining for gold with few security measures in place. Rescue efforts have been called off for the night and were hampered by the fact that there was no record of how many people had entered the mine. Recent torrential rains had weakened the sides of the open cast mine, sparking a landslide of mud and rock on some 50 prospectors.

Cataract Surgery

A plane has crashed into a busy market area in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 17 people. Coffee Break Today

We took a coffee break this morning with our former neighbors, Lois and Don, Elnore and Rose. Donna and Gene weren't there as they have already left for Texas for most of the winter. They have already moved out of our old house and have an apartment at Prairie View. It is only 2 rooms. What a drastic change. Donna isn't happy but she has alzheimers and it is for the best as she already doesn't remember from day to day. We will be watching Lois and Don's house again for the winter and sending her some mail she requested. They are going to the Black Hills today or as far as they can get and then on to Arizona after a few days in the Black Hills. Don has rigged up a thermostat and light and when the light goes on Elnore will call us and we will go over because that means something has gone wrong with their furnace. Rose isn't doing very well but for 89 she is doing pretty good. Her son and his wife want her to move in with them and I think the time is getting very very close but I can sort of imagine how hard it is to leave your home forever. Lois is planning for this to be their last trip to Arizona as she will be 75 and Don is 80. She had her cataracts removed and doesn't wear glasses anymore except for reading. She looked different without glasses. We had a good visit over coffee, pecan rolls and homemade bars. Had a little lunch and now for a nap.

UK Troops in Basra Cut by 1,000

US troops are to be cut by 1,000 by the end of the year, Gordon Brown has said on a visit to Iraq. Mr. Brown also confirmed Basra province could be handed over to full Iraqi control within the next two months. The Ministry of Defense announced in July that 500 troops would be withdrawn - 270 of whom are already back home. The remaining 230 and a further 500 should be home for Christmas. Israel Admits to Syria Air Strike

Israel has confirmed that it carried out a strike on a Syrian military installation last month. Syria accused Israel at the time but Israeli officials refused to comment, and the Israeli military censor imposed a strict blackout on information. Volcano Erupts on Red Sea Island

The volcano erupted spewing hundreds of feet into the air according to witnesses. A search for survivors is under way after the volcano erupted on a Yemeni island in the Red Sea, killing at least four people. Four bodies were recovered from the sea and two soldiers are missing. Yemeni coastguards requested the help of nearby Nato ships in the search and rescue operation.

Earthquakes Strike Near New Zealand

Three strong earthquakes struck Sunday near New Zealand and the U.S. territory of Guam in remote parts of the Pacific Ocean. None of the quakes caused a tsunami. There were also no reports of damages, as the quakes were centered far from land. A magnitude 7.3 earthquake was registered near New Zealand's uninhabited Auckland Islands, about 300 miles southwest of its southernmost city of Invercargill, the United States Geological Survey said on its Web site. Another quake struck four hours later in the same region with a magnitude of 6.6. Earlier, a magnitude 7.1 quake shook the Pacific Ocean about 215 miles southeast of the island of Guam.
