Under the proposed plan, Goodyear will make a one-time payment to fund a Voluntary Employees Beneficiary Association. Caribbean Storm Death Toll Rises

A rare December cyclone caused a great deal of damage in the Caribbean. The toll there from Tropical Storm Olga, has risen to 25 confirmed deaths. The hardest hit was the Dominican Republic where 22 people were killed by floods and landslides. Most of the people died in the northern city of Santiago, after officials, fearing a collapse of a dam, released water in the already swollen Yaque River.

Death Penalty - New Jersey

New Jersey lawmakers have approved a bill abolishing the death penalty. They took a vote and in a 44-36 vote, the Democratic-run senate assembly replaced the death sentence with life in prison without parole. I believe the bill was signed into law today by Democratic Governor Jon Corzine, an opponent of the death penalty. They talk a lot about it being cruel and inhuman punishment to put a man to death but what about his victims. Smoking Raises Risk of Diabetes

Smoking is linked to a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, US research suggests.The University of Lausanne looked at 25 studies involving 1.2 million patients. They found smokers had a 44% increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared with non-smokers - with the risk rising with the number of cigarettes smoked. The Journal of the American Medical Association study found the increased risk for those who smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day rose to 61%. For lighter smokers the risk was 29% higher than for a non-smoker. The increased risk of developing diabetes in former smokers was 23%

The US National Cancer Institute found high insulin levels and increased resistance to the hormone were associated with a higher cancer risk. UnitedHealth ex-CEO Gives Up $468 Million

Former UnitedHealth Group Inc. Chairman and CEO, William McGuire has agreed to surrender more than $400 million to settle a lawsuit related to a stock options backdating scandal, the company and the Securities and Exchange Commission announced on Thursday. McGuire, who stepped down a year ago as the highest profile corporate chief caught in the probe, will give up $320 million in stock options and forgo more than $99 million in other retirement and executive savings benefits, according to the Minneapolis-based company. In a statement, the Securities and Exchange Commission valued the settlement at $468 million. The SEC said McGuire did not admit or deny guilt.

Richard Zannino will depart as chief executive officer of Dow Jones & Co after the financial news publishing company is sold to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the company announced Thursday. Zannino became CEO of Dow Jones, which publishes the Wall Street Journal, in early 2006. Dow Jones said in a statement that Zannino's successor would be announced shortly and that Zannino would assist in the transition. Murdoch's deal to acquire Dow Jones for $5.6 billion is expected to close shortly after Dow Jones shareholders vote on it December 13.

English Have Healthier Hearts

People from England who live in Scotland are less likely to die from heart disease than those born north of the border, according to a study done on this. Researchers at Edinburgh University found those born in other parts of the UK who move to Scotland are 20% less likely to die from heart problems. Triple Car Bombs Hig South Iraq

Three car bombs have exploded in the southern Iraqi city of Amara, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 100. Two bombs exploded in a car park packed with laborers waiting to travel to work, and a third detonated as people gathered to inspect the damage. Amara is 236 miles south of the capital, Baghdad, in Maysan province. It is a mainly Shia area, with four groups - three with armed militias - competing for political supremacy. It was one of the deadliest attacks in Iraq in recent months.

Oklahoma Ice Storm

Have you been watching the effects of the ice storm in Oklahoma and now it is in Kansas City and crept into Iowa too. Saw highway pictures of Des Moines and the streets looked pretty icy. I read a blog this morning and the gal had pictures of their home and how the trees were falling. One just missed her brother, who had been standing in that very spot just minutes before a huge tree came crashing down. Thousands are without light and heat. We can be very thankful we don't have that here but I really feel sorry for those without heat as it is very cold this time of year.

Christmas Cookies

This is the time of year when all the baking gets done. I don't do a lot of baking anymore but our Pastor's wife has invited us to a coffee Saturday morning and we are supposed to bring a dozen Christmas cookies. So yesterday I baked a half batch and ended up with 25 cookies. Set aside the 12 best looking ones, my husband ate one, and gave the neighbor the other 12. She doesn't have sweets in the house because her husband is diabetic so she was quite happy to receive the cookies and I am not tempted to eat them myself.

Snow Again

It is snowing again and that is just going to make it more slippery than ever because we have a lot of ice underneath. Now you can't see the ice but you will know it once you go flying through the air. My brother says he has fallen twice already and once right on his back and bumped the back of his head. Then he fell on his knees and they are in bad shape to start with so it sure didn't do them any good. I hope he stays in more and doesn't fall anymore. I think the ice melt companies are making a fortune already this winter.

Ice and Snow

We watch a neighbor's house while they are in sunny Arizona and I take the mail over and go through the house and make sure the furnace is running good and the plants are watered. This morning there was a pile of ice right in front of the door from the last sleet/snow storm. My husband had to take a spade and break it all loose so I could get in the door. Whoever is moving their snow should have done that before it froze solid. It was a lot of work, but he got it done and we got the house checked and Christmas cactus is blooming. It's too bad they aren't here to see it.

Twins

Today my little baby twin girls turned 49. It is very hard to believe as I can remember the morning they were born like it was yesterday. The first one was born at 9:00 a.m. and weighed 7 lbs 2 oz and the second one was born at 9:06 a.m. and weighed 6 lbs 15 1/2 oz. One of the ladies in the hospital couldn't believe it as I am very short and she said one of my babies weighed more than her little 5 lb girl. It was very exciting as we didn't know till 10 days ahead of time that we were having twins for sure. They didn't have all the fancy ultra sounds they have today. They took an x-ray and I wish I had asked to see it but I was young and didn't think of it. I suppose they saw two little skeletons in there so they knew it was twins. We had to pick 3 sets of names, two for girls, two for boys, and one for one of each. That was an undertaking in itself.
