Gas Prices - Experts Predict spring Spike

Experts are predicting gas pump prices, which jumped by almost a dollar a gallon in each of the last two springs in many parts of the United States, will spike again this year as refiners and gas stations switch from winter to summer blended fuels. The increases could push the average national price to a record $3.50 a gallon or more by June. That would be 17 percent higher than today's average of just under $3 a gallon, which already is about 80 cents a gallon higher than a year ago levels.

Arson Blamed for Fire That Killed 6 in Ohio

A house fire killed four children, their mother and grandmother early last week and an l8 year old neighbor was charged with murder hours later. The blaze started near the front of the house, either on the porch or just inside the front door. It spread quickly and consumed the home. Eleven people were inside the house when the fire started. Three people were being treated at the hospital. Michael Davis, who lived in the neighborhood, was charged with six counts of aggravated murder and six counts of aggravated arson. It wasn't immediately clear whether Davis had an attorney or knew the victims. There is just no respect for human life anymore at all and people have no conscience.

New Computer

I got a new computer about 2 weeks ago now and it really is fast. I love it. It can do so many things that the old one couldn't do. And our oldest son programmed all kinds of neat things into it. One of the programs, I can see the earth from a satellite right at the very moment you are looking at it. You can see the daylight side of earth and see the dark side with all the little lights that are on. I am also able to look at the meteor showers that have occurred when I couldn't stay up late enough to see them. It is really neat.

Bedtime

Well everyone is going to bed but me. Here I sit with my fingers flying over the keyboard, typing posts. It is a lot of fun and takes imagination to do this. It is sort of like a writer must feel when they write a book or an article for a magazine. You get a real feeling of accomplishment when you have completed your post and publish it for the world to read. I won't stay up much longer though. The Landlord

We have the best landlord anyone could ask for. By the time the last snow flake is falling he is here with his skidloader clearing the driveway for us. What more could you ask for? He has pushed the snow into HUGE piles and the neighbor kids are sliding down them on their saucers and even just the seat of their pants and having a ball. They play outside and get lots of fresh air and that is so much better than so many kids who now stay inside playing video games and getting no exercise.

Mexican Night

It was supposed to be Mexican night tonight but it is so cold and the roads are so bad, we decided that a warm home was the place to be tonight. So we grilled ribeye steak on my indoor Char-B-Que and baked potatoes and had a great supper in. Now I am having fun posting while my husband watches all kinds of stuff on TV. I can hear the remote control getting a real workout so he must not be finding what he likes.

What a winter!!! Monday was a gorgeous day of 42 degrees and we went shopping all over town and enjoyed an almost spring-like day. It was so nice to be out and see melting snow instead of below zero weather. Israel Closes Gaza Crossings, and Pounds Hamas

Israel sought to put an end to a surge in rocket attacks from Gaza, sending its air force against a symbol of Hamas power in the heart of Gaza City and simultaneously choking off shipments of fuel and food across its border with the strip. An Israeli warplane attacked the downtown offices of the Palestinian Interior Ministry, flattening one wing of the empty building, killing a woman at a wedding party next door and wounding at least 46 other civilians, some of the children. The attack was the first on a ministry building since Hamas seized control of Gaza last June. An Israeli military commentator said it was meant to send a message to the violent Islamic group that further rocket attacks could cause the conflict to spiral.

New Pictures of Babies

We got some new pictures last Saturday of the newest great grandbabies and they are sure growing. Baby girl looks so much like her Mom and baby boy looks so much like his Dad. PGA Tour Caddie Struck Down and Killed

Steve Duplantis, a popular PGA Tour caddie known for bringing out the best in his players, was killed early Wednesday when he was struck by a taxi while crossing a street. He was in Del Mar when he stepped off a center median and into the path of a taxi. The 35 year old Duplantis was pronounced dead at the scene. He was working at the Buick Invitational for Eric Axley. Axle was visibly shaken when he arrived at Torrey Pines and asked for a few days before he commented.

Musharraf Downplays Bin Laden as Threat

When will Osama bin Laden and his top deputy be caught? This is the question that Pervez Musharraf says he still gets a lot. The Pakistani president insists it is more important for his 100,000 troops on the Afghan border to root out the Taliban than search for al-Qaida leaders. Musharraf said it doesn't mean much that bin Laden and Aayman al-Zawahri are still at large. He suggested they are far less a threat to his regime than Taliban-linked militants entrenched in Pakistan's west. Home Construction at Nearly Three-decade Low

Did you know that three of the fans favorites are coming back to ABC's "All My Children" Rebecca Budig returned this week as Greenlee Smythe, a role she originated in l999. She left the daytime soap opera in 2005. The show recast the role last year with Sabine Singh, but by popular demand, she stepped aside for Budig. The fans were quite vocal and they wanted her back as Greenlee. When the time is right, as it was now, Rebecca was available so we brought her back a spokeman said. Budig is married to Bob Guiney of ABC's "The Bachelor" and he had hinted that her return could generate some couple suffling if she has no chemistry with her character's present beau, Aidan Devane who is portrayed by Alden Turner. Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan are also moving back to Pine Valley as married supercouple Jesse and Angie Hubbard.

Air Travelers - Security Showdown

Millions of air travelers may find going through airport security is much more complicated this spring as the Bush administration heads toward a showdown with state governments over post Sept. 11 rules for new driver's licenses. By May, the dispute could leave millions of people unable to use their licenses to board planes, but privacy advocates called that a hollow threat by federal officials. Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, who was unveiling final details of the REAL ID
Act's rules, said that if states want their licenses to remain valid for air travel after May 2008, those states must seek a waiver indicating they want more time to comply with the legislation. Chertoff said that for any state which doesn't seek such a waiver by May, residents of that state will have to use a passport or certain types of federal border-crossing cards, if they want to avoid a vigorous secondary screening at airport security.

Consumer Confidence Falls Over Jobs,Energy

Consumer confidence fell as worries about jobs, energy bills and home foreclosures darkened people's feelings about the country's economic health and their own financial well-being. According to the RBC Cash Index, confidence tumbled to a mark of 56.3 in early January. That compares with a reading of 65.9 in December - and a benchmark of 100 - and was the worst since the index began in 2002.

Gold Futures Top $900 an Ounce For the First Time

Gold futures briefly rose above $900 an ounce for the first time as high oil prices, a weak dollar and fears of a U.S. recession led uneasy investors to keep buying the precious metal. An ounce of gold for February delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange jumped $6.50 to $900.10 in morning trading. This was an all time high and a psychologically important milestone. Gold later slipped to $898.70 an ounce on profit-taking but remained in record territory. Still, when adjusted for inflation, gold remains well below its all time high. An ounce of gold at $875 in l980 would be worth $2,115 to $2,200 today.

Trade Deficit at Highest Level in 14 Months

The U.S. trade deficit in November rose to the highest level in 14 months. This reflected the record foreign crude oil prices. Also, the deficit with China declined slightly while the weak dollar boosted exports to another record high. The Commerce Department reported that the trade deficit, the gap between imports and exports, jumped by 9.3 percent, to $63.1 billion. The imbalance was much larger than the $60 billion that had been expected. The increase was driven by a 16.3 percent increase in America's foreign oil bill.

Airfare Increases Follow Rise in Oil Prices

Airlines are responding to oil's latest surge by pushing ticket prices even higher. Round trip domestic fares began rising $10 to $20 or more as crude futures crossed the $100 a barrel mark. Several major carriers increased their prices, each citing higher fuel costs as the reason. The widespread increases follow nearly two dozen attempted systemwide fare increases in 2007, or about double the number during the previous year, according to data compiled by FareCompare.com, which tracks airfare changes.

Boeing's Dreamliner Sets Record Jet Order

The Dreamliner, with a backlog valued at more than $120 billion, is Boeing's most successful aircraft sales campaign. Boeing Co., the world's second-largest maker of commercial planes, said orders for its 787 Dreamliner reached 802 planes after completing a contract with Vietnam Airlines Corp. and Vietnam Aircraft Leasing Co. The 12 plane order, which was announced last year, is valued at about $2 billion. The planes will be included in Boeing's record 2007 order total of more than 1,213 jetliners. The fuel efficient plane is scheduled to start its engines and systems for the first time this month after parts shortages and assembly glitches caused delivery to be delayed by six months. The first plane is now scheduled for delivery to All Nippon Airways Co. as late as Decembert 2008. That is one BIG airplane.

Existing Home Sales Rise

Sales of previously owned homes nudged up in November but that didn't improve the broader picture of a feeble housing market racked by record high foreclosures and tight credit. Sales of existing single family homes, condominiums and townhouses rose in November from October, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5 million units. The pace was still the second lowest since l999. The lowest pace of $4.98 million was registered in October.

Asian Tsunami - Prayers, Drills Held to Remember

In Calang, Indonesia, survivors prayed at mass graves and mosques to mark the third anniversary of the Asian tsunami, while warning sirens sent hundreds fleeing beaches during a drill to test an alert network established since the disaster. The waves on the morning of Dec. 26, 2004, spawned by the mightiest earthquake in 40 years, killed around 230,000 people in 12 Indian Ocean nations, just under half of them in the Indonesian province of Aceh on Sumatra island. Coastal communities in Sri Lanka and India lost some 45,000 people between them. The waves also crashed into tourist resorts in southern Thailand, killing more than 5,000, half of them foreign vacationers. These was one of the most horrible disasters that I can remember seeing on television.

Toyota to Show Concept Hybrid Truck

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to introduce a concept hybrid pickup truck featuring improved fuel economy and lower emissions at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, according to an announcement made by the automaker. The A-BAT concept vehicle is equipped with Hybrid Synergy Drive, Toyota's third-generation, gas-electric, hybrid powertrain technology, according to the company. Its trapezoidal profile was borrowed from the Pruis, another hybrid Toyota vehicle.
