Oil Spikes Above $102, 1st Time, Then Falls Back
Crude prices moved about $102 a barrel for the first time Wednesday, then retreated after the government reported the nation is greased with more oil and gasoline than expected. Prices none the less stayed within range of Tuesday's record close as the dollar tumbled to fresh lows against the euro and U.S. economic worries drove more money into energy futures as a hedge against inflation. Light, sweet crude for April delivery fell $1.24 to settle at $99.64 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after surging as high as $102.08 a barrel in trading earlier.

Lohan Blames Industry for Ledger's Death
Lindsay Lohan, who was once linked to Heath Ledger and was spotted crying after his passing, is speaking out on the late actor's death. In the new issue of New York magazine, the actress, age 21, poses nearly naked for the recreation of "The Last Sitting," the last series of photos of Marilyn Monroe. Lohan called Monroe's suicide "tragic" adding, "you know, it's also tragic what just recently happened to someone else." Asked if she was referring to Ledger's prescription drug overdose, she replied, "They are both prime examples of what this industry can do to someone." Still, the star who's been in rehab three times insists she will not end up like them. "I sure wouldn't let it happen to me," she said.
Substation Causes Cascading Lights Out in Florida
A relatively minor glitch in Florida's electrical grid somehow triggered a chain reaction Tuesday that caused a nuclear plant to shut down and briefly cut power in patches from Daytona Beach through the Florida Keys. Up to 3 million people, about one fifth of Florida's population lost power at various points during the afternoon, though there were no safety concerns at the nuclear plant. And while many areas were hit hard, the outages were short lived and only about 20,000 people lacked electricity during the evening commute home.

Industry Approves Plan for Testing Toys
The U.S. Toy Industry Association, whose members include Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc. said its board unanimously approved a plan for a testing system following the recall of tens of millions of Chinese-made toys last year. The proposal includes more stringent procedures for analyzing safety during the design and manufacturing of toys, as well as the testing of finished products. The $22 billion U.S. toy industry was rocked last year by the recall of tens of millions of Chinese-made products, many for containing excessive lead paint or magnets that could be swallowed. Toymakers and retailers have implemented stricter standards, and Congress introduced legislation to overhaul consumer safety laws.

ConAgra Foods Increases Earnings Outlook
ConAgra Foods said fiscal third-quarter profit from continuing operations would be higher than expected because of strength at its trading and merchandising segment. ConAgra previously had earnings per share in the second half of fiscal 2008 in the range of 70 cents per share, excluding items, with slightly more profit in the third quarter than the fourth quarter. The company also said higher prices on several brands, effective in late March, would lift results in both quarters as well.
Wal-Mart Posts 4Percent Earnings Increase
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. expects a more profitable year selling to penny-pinching shoppers after its renewed focus on low prices paid off over the holidays with a 4 percent rise in fourth-quarter profit. The world's largest retailer, emerging from a yearlong turnaround effort after sales stumbled in 2005 and 2006, said that aggressive holiday discounts and improvements in its more than 4,000 U. S. stores boosted sales despite consumer worries. I am not surprised as I do a lot of my shopping in Wal-Mart because I don't think you can beat their prices.
Accounting Blog
My friend is looking for a good accounting job that pays better than what she is making now. I told her to get on the Internet and look into this online website accounting blog because they have a reputable business and have been in business since 1967. They specialize in the field of finances and their recruiters, themselves, have been in other positions before they joined this company so they have had experience and the know how involved in finding the right person for the right position. They have a consistent record of successful placements. And they are highly respected by both companies and those looking for positions. Whether a company is looking for middle management or upper level management, they are up to the job of filling that position well, to the satisfaction of both the employer and the employee. I know my friend will do well working with this company for the position she desires.
Doctor Appointment
Doctor appointments become a way of life as you get older, it seems. My husband had another doctor appointment today 30 miles away and yesterday we thought we were going to have a blizzard today and wouldn't be able to go. But it stopped snowing and the sun came out and melted the ice and snow on the highway and the roads were actually quite good. We stopped in our favorite fast food Mexican place and ate and by the time we headed for home the wind had really come up and it dried off most of the highway. So that was good. I am glad we didn't have to reschedule that appointment. Now it is done and out of the way. Now for the dentist next.
European Officials Look at Chocolate Pricing
The European Commission has asked for information on Hershey's pricing practices, a signal that regulators across the globe are taking a broader look into allegations of an industrywide price-fixing scheme. In its annual report released Tuesday, Hershey Co. also said it had been named in about 50 civil antitrust suits in the United States and three in Canada, filed on behalf of consumers and distributors in connection with price-fixing allegations. Hershey's report contains the first indication that European regulators now are looking at the U.S. candy company, which does only a small portion of its business in Europe.

Officials to Take Second Look at Reward
Federal officials have agreed to take another look at an anti-terrorism reward that excluded two Zacarias Moussaoui tipsters, two senators said after meeting with the officials last Tuesday. Last month, the $5 million reward went to Clarence Prevost, a key witness in Moussaoui's death penalty trial in 2006. In the case, a jury concluded the Moussaoui's actions furthered the Sept. 11 plot but spared his life, sentencing him to life in prison. Prevost testified that he urged his bosses at the Pan Am International Flight Academy in Minnesota to call the FBI in August 2001. The reward stunned two flight instructors who alerted the FBI to Moussaoui a month before the attacks.
Serb Demonstrators Attack U.N. Police
Violent protests rocked Serb-dominated northern Kosovo on Friday as mobs chanting "Kosovo is ours!" hurled stones, bottles and firecrackers at U.N. Police guarding a bridge that divides Serbs from ethnic Albanians. The scenes brought back memories of the carnage unleashed by former Serb autocrat Slobodan Milosevic the last time Kosovo tried to break away from Serbia, which considers the territory its ancestral homeland.

Shiite Cleric Announces 6-month Cease-fire
Powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr opted Friday to keep the cease-fire order for his Mahdi Army militia in place for another six months, a step that will hold down U.S. and Iraqi casualties while bolstering al-Sadr's importance as a political player as Iraqi factions jostle for power. Opening a sealed statement from the firebrand leader, scores of Shiite clerics around the country read his message at Friday prayer services. In al-Sadr's Baghdad stronghold of Sadr City, thousands of men sat and listened attentively to the statement as green and black banners - symbols of his movement - waved in a brisk wind. The freeze was extended until mid-August.

Jennifer Lopez Gives Birth to twins
Jennifer Lopez gave birth to twins early Friday, making the singer and her husband Marc Anthony the parents of a boy and a girl after one of pop music's most closely watched pregnancies. Lopez's manager, Simon Fields told the Associated Press that she is thrilled. Fields confirmed that the girl arrived first, weighing 5 pounds 7 ounces and the boy is 6 pounds even and arrived about 15 minutes later at a Long Island Hospital. Lopez and Anthony, 38, married in 2004. The twins are her first children and his fourth and fifth. I really enjoy her movies. She is one of my favorites. I have twins girls myself.

Judge Scalia: "So-called Torture" Cannot be Ruled Out
One of the United States' top judges said in an interview broadcast in Britain last week, that interrogators can inflict pain to obtain information about an imminent terrorist threat. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that aggressive interrogation could be appropriate to learn where a bomb was hidden shortly before it was set to explode or to discover the plans or whereabouts of a terrorist group. He said that it seemed to him you have to say, as unlikely as it is, that it would be absurd to say you couldn't, stick something under the fingernail, smack him in the face. It would be absurd to say you couldn't do that he said. Scalia said that determining when physical coercion could come into play was a difficult question. "How close does the threat have to be? And how severe can the infliction of pain be? I don't think these are easy questions at all, in either direction," he told the BBC's "Law in Action" program.
Exciting Friday
Today is Friday and the sun is shining and it is going to warm up. I have a surprise coming today or my husband and he is really going to be surprised. It is a 42" TV. He has been wanting one ever since lightning blew out our big 50" and we decided that was almost too big anyway for our room But now we are using a 27" so this will be great. I am excited.
President Bush Not Seeking Power in Africa
In a country teeming with resources the world covets, President Bush sought Wednesday to soothe African fears about American interests on the continent. He said the U.S. isn't aiming to make Africa into a base for greater military power or a proxy battleground with China. The desire for Africa's vast raw materials - oil, gold, diamonds, minerals, crops and more - has a long and often violent and exploitative history. Bush's talk about how U.S. generosity has made strides against disease and poverty encountered some skepticism here about the underlying American agenda. Bush sought to deal with suspicions about the creation of a new U.S military command dedicated to Africa. He said he knew there were rumors in Ghana that all he was coming to do was to try to convince them to put a big military base there but Bush said that was baloney. That he wanted to dispel the notion that all of a sudden America was bringing all kinds of military to Africa.

Fog
We had heavy fog again last night and the trees are all painted white with frost. When the sun comes up and glistens on the trees and bushes, it is like many sparkling diamonds everywhere. It is a sight that artists paint and we enjoy even though we dread a slight warm up knowing there will be fog. The fog is quite dangerous in winter when it gets so thick. Sometimes it is ice fog and you can feel the bits of ice against your face when you go outside.
Bitter Cold and Snow
We have had one tough winter this year. We had a couple of good years so I suppose we were way overdue in this area for a snowy, bitterly cold, windy winter. There is ice everywhere and if you don't watch your step very closely, you will find yourself lying on the ground with broken bones. The emergency wards are full of people with injuries. Once the snow melts a little and freezes back into ice, there seems to be no getting rid of it and then a little fresh snow covering it, is an accident waiting to happen. We are really going to appreciate Spring this year.
Credit Cards for College Students
I believe it is important for parents to get the right credit cards for their students before they leave for college. We have all seen on TV, that there are so many unscrupulous credit card dealers that descend on the students on the college campus with every card imaginable and many are taken in by this. Students use them to spend for stuff they will never be able to pay for and it gets way out of hand. Parents and students can go to this online website Credit Cards For College Students for the best assortment of credit cards available on the market today. There is a credit card that will fit your every situation. Many have cash back rewards, low interest, no annual fees and will be just what you are looking for, I am sure.
Girl, 7, making Slow Recovery After Shooting
Alexis Goggins climbed aboard a special tricycle and maneuvered through hospital hallways, beginning the months of physical therapy she needs to recover from six gunshot wounds. To many people, this soft spoken 7 year old is a hero after she threw herself across her mother just as a gunman was about to shoot the woman in an SUV. After more than two months in the hospital and six surgeries, Alexis was recently released. She returns twice a week for physical therapy. The young girl bears several scars from the Dec. 2 shooting, including a long, thin surgical line stretching from one side of her hairline to the other. Her right eye, which was blinded in the attack, has also been removed. This poor child was very brave.
Consumer Prices Post Another Gain
Consumers paid more to fill up their gas tanks, buy groceries and go to the hospital in January as prices on a range of items climbed. Inflation was increasing even as the economy was slowing dramatically, a development certain to raise concerns at the Federal Reserve. The Fed has cut interest rates aggressively in the belief that fighting off a threatened recession was more important than worrying about inflationary pressures. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose by 0.3 percent, the biggest jump in seven months. That increase reflected higher prices for medical care, education, clothing, tobacco and airline fares.

Iraq's New Flag Symbolizes Break From Past
A new Iraqi flag, stripped of the three green stars of Saddam Hussein's toppled Baath part, was hoisted over the Iraqi Cabinet building in a symbolic break with the past nearly five years after the U.S. led invasion. It marked the latest of several tweaks and revisions, and one failed American supervised redesign, of Iraq's national symbol over the decades from monarch to military rule to the rise and fall of Saddam's regime. And more fine tuning could come after the one year lifespan for the new flag. Its main modification removes the stars, which were first added in the early 1960s in homage to the pan-Arab bonds promoted by Egypt's Gammal Abdel Nasser. Later, the green stars were associated with slogans of Saddam's party: unity, freedom and socialism. The new design also officially enshrines the new script for the Arabic words "Allahu Akbar", or "God is Great" in green - which were added as part of Saddam's 1990-91 occupation of Kuwait. The original calligraphy, believed inspired by Saddam's handwriting, was replaced with the sparse Kufic script after his fall in 2003. But many houses continued to fly the old flag.

Air Force Says Budgets are Billions Short
Air Force officials are warning that unless their budget is increased dramatically, the military's high flying branch won't dominate the skies as it has for decades. After more than seven years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Air Force's aging jet fighters, bombers, cargo aircraft and gunships are at the breaking point, they say, and expensive ultramodern replacements are needed fast. An extra $20 billion each year over the next five, beginning with an Air Force budget of about $137 billion in 2009 instead of the $117 billion proposed by the Bush administration would solve that problem according to Maj. Gen. Paul Selva, the Air Force's director of strategic planning.
Consumer Product Safety Commission Blasts Toy Industry
The acting director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission lashed out Monday at the toy industry for a lack of safety controls that led to a string of highly publicized recalls, and she warned that the industry has the obligation to regulate itself. Nancy Nord said she would not tolerate this industry not complying with our regulations. She spoke to the annual American International Toy Fair expo and also said the federal agency, under attack for not acting quickly enough to eliminate hazardous products from store shelves, is adding staff and working more closely with customs officials to stop suspect imports.

President Bush Gets Warm Reception in Tanzania
President Bush was swept up in an outpouring of affection Monday in Tanzania's rural north, where tens of thousands lined the road to see him. One woman burst into a dance of joy just from a hug and fierce-looking Maasai warriors leapt and chanted in his honor. Midway through a trek through five African nations that have benefited from U. S. largesse, Bush spent the day in Mount Kilamanjaro's massive shadow to reinforce the strides being made with his malaria program. During stops at both a rural health complex and on a gleaming factory floor, Bush showcased real life benefits of the U.S. led fight against the mosquito borne disease that kills a million young children each year in impoverished tropical countries.

Billy Graham is doing well after surgery. A postoperative scan of Billy Graham's brain following a surgery to update a shunt that controls excess fluid is encouraging, according to his doctor. It looks fine and he's doing well and is alert and articulate, his doctor said and they are pleased with his progress. After a large breakfast, the 89 year old Southern Baptist minister began a daily regimen of exercise that includes walking the halls of Asheville's Mission Hospitals.

Astronauts Say Teary Farewell, Seal the Hatches
The crew of the space shuttle and station said a teary farewell, then sealed the hatches between them Sunday after more than a week of working tirelessly together to build a bigger and better scientific outpost in orbit. Atlantis was scheduled to undock early today, its load considerably lighter than when it arrived Feb. 9 with Europe's premiere space laboratory, Columbus.Astronaut Daniel Tani was especially emotional as he left the international space station, his home for the past four months. Before floating into Atlantis for his long overdue ride home, Tani paid tribute to his mother, Rose, who was killed in a car accident while he was in space. He couldn't wait to get back to his wife and his two little girls.
Insurgent Attacks Down 60% in a Year
Iraqi military officials expressed hope Sunday that security gains from a yearlong crackdown against extremists will allow the removal of thousands of concrete barriers in six months that protect Baghdad residents from bomb attacks. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spent the weekend touting the successes of the security operation that began one year ago and peaked last summer with the influx of thousands of U.S. troops. The operation helped restore some security to a country that in January 2007 was on the brink of civil war. The U.S. military said that insurgent attacks had declined by 60 percent over the past year, but cautioned the war was not yet won.

Romney Endorses John McCain
Republican campaign dropout Mitt Romney endorsed John McCain for the party's presidential nomination and asked his national convention delegates to swing behind the likely nominee. "Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," the former Massachusetts governor said, standing alongside his one-time rival at his now defunct campaign's headquarters. This is a man capable of leading our country at a dangerous hour," said Romney
Iraq Troop Withdrawal May Slow or Stop
President Bush said he will not jeopardize security gains in Iraq by withdrawing U.S. forces too fast, another signal that troop reductions could slow or stop altogether this summer. The President said he would resist any temptation to bring troops home to score political points with a war-wear public or compromise with Democrats in Congress seeing to wind down the war.
Senate Approves Immunity for Eavesdropping
The Senate on Tuesday approved new rules for government eavesdropping on phone calls and emails, giving the White House much of the latitude it wanted and granting legal immunity to telecommunications companies that helped in the snooping after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Protection for the telecom companies is the most prominent feature of the legislation, something President Bush had insisted on as essential to getting private sector cooperation in spying on foreign terrorists and other targets. The bill would give retroactive protection to companies that acted without court permission. The House did not include the immunity provision in a similar bill it passed last year. House Republicans now want to adopt the Senate bill, which would avoid contentious negotiations to work out differences between the competing legislation.

Fossil of Primitive Bat Found in Wyoming
A fossil found in Wyoming has apparently resolved a long standing question about when bats gained their radar-like ability to navigate and locate airborne insects at night. The answer: after they started fling. The discovery revealed the most primitive bat known, from a previously unrecognized species that lived some 25.5 million years ago. Its skeleton shows it could fly, but that it lacked a series of bony features associated with the ability to emit high pitched sounds and then hear them bounce back from objects and prey. Until now, all the early known fossil bats showed evidence of both flying and making these high pitched sounds.
Modern Furniture
We have had our furniture for a very long time and we have been talking about shopping for a modern sofa. We really need to update all our furniture and we found this online website that has a beautiful line of leather sofas and living room furniture in many colors. Our budget being tight, we found out that they also have discount contemporary furniture of all kinds. It is hard to decide whether we would like a plush sectional couch or a modern sofa bed for the grandchildren to sleep in when they stay overnight. We had one before we moved and it was used a lot so that might just be the right thing to purchase from them. We also found out that they could deliver our furniture to us within 2 to 7 business days because they are a direct importer and it would be a flat fee for shipping. They can ship that quickly anywhere in the United States. Another thing I found very interesting are their articles on how to decorate with contemporary furniture. I do not really know much about decorating and arrangement and these articles are a very real help to me. The photos of the rooms are very helpful and it is amazing what various colors add to your decor. If you are looking for new furniture of any kind, this is a great website to check into and their prices are lower than anyone in the industry so you can save money and it will really help your budget.

Bill Clinton Campaign Chief Backs Obama
The man who served as national manager of former President Clinton's 1992 campaign endorsed Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday. David Wilhelm, who led the campaign and later became chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Obama had the unique ability to encourage cooperation as a 65 percent president after the divisive years of a 51 percent majority. He was referring to the notion that Obama could govern the country with the support of a large coalition, as opposed to more polarized support for President Bush. What do you think?

Venezuela Stops Selling to Exxon Mobil
Venezuela's state oil company said Tuesday that it has stopped selling crude to Exxon Mobil Corp. and has suspended commercial relations with the U.S. based oil company. State run Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, said in a statement that it "has paralyzed sales of crude to Exxon Mobil." It said the decision was made "as an act of reciprocity" for the company's "judicial-economic harassment." President Hugo Chavez has shaken oil markets this week with broader threats to cut off oil supplies to the United States.

NASCAR: All is Well for Daytona 500
Jimmie Johnson, two time series champion, took a trip to the Florida Keys. Crew Chief, Tony Eury Jr. visited Sea World. Some of the NASCAR's top officials played golf. All was quiet for a change at Daytona International Speedway on Monday, just the NASCAR wanted it. Cheating scandals rocked the Daytona 500 the previous two years, tarnishing NASCAR's most prestigious event and turning the attention to the uglier side of racing. It made for a busy Monday and Tuesday at Daytona, which is traditionally closed to crews on those two days of Speedweeks. Instead, NASCAR officials huddled in their offices to determine punishments, while offending teams waited nervously for the hammer to drop and it did. Five teams were popped last season and six people were kicked out of the season opener, nearly turning NASCAR into a national laughingstock in the days leading up to the Super Bowl of racing. But not this year. All is well for Daytona 500 this year.
U.S. Manufacturing Economy Expands
The nation's manufacturing sector expanded at a modest clip in January, recovering from the downward trend seen in December, according to an industry group survey shown on Friday. After slipping to its lowest level in almost five years, the institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index rose last month to a reading of 50.7, up from a revised reading of 48.4 in the previous month. A reading above 50 indicates growth, and below that level indicates contraction.

12,000 Flee Darfur After Airstrikes
Up to 12,000 refugees fled Sudan's Darfur region to neighboring Chad over the weekend following air strikes by the Sudanese military and thousands more may be coming, according to the U.N. refugee agency. The agency was bringing emergency assistance to the Chad border where the Darfur refugees were giving detailed descriptions of air attacks Friday on three West Darfur towns. The refugees are destitute and terrified and told of their villages being looted and burned and encircled by militia. Most of the new refugees in Chad are men and they told the U.N. that thousands of women and children are on their way. The U.N. says the worsening situation in Darfur has been exacerbated by a recent rebel attack on the capital of neighboring Chad. Chad has accused Sudan's President Omar-al-Bashir of backing those rebels in a bid to prevent deployment of a European peacekeeping force in the Chad-Sudan border region where some 400,000 refugees are living.

Iraqi Insurgents Strike, U.S. Death Toll Rises
Thursday, violence returned to the southern city of Basra, where militants pummeled Britain's airport base with 20 rockets and British gunners answered with volleys of artillery. Civilians were killed and wounded in the crossfire. In Baghdad, a bomb that was rigged to a car blew apart at a bus stop, killing at least five people in a Shiite enclave that had not seen major violence in months. Although U.S. forces have expanded, the latest campaigns also have driven up the military's death toll after months of decline. At least 38 U.S. soldiers were killed in January, well above the 23 in December bu still sharply lower than a year ago.

Microsoft Makes $42Billion Bid for Yahoo
Executives of Microsoft hope to topple Google but we don't think this is going to be enough to do it. Microsoft is trying to force crippled rival Yahoo Inc. into a wager worth nearly $42 billion that the two companies together will have a better chance of tackling the Internet search leader. Microsoft's attempt to buy Yahoo, spelled out in an unsolicited offer announced last Friday, shows just how much Google threatens the world's largest software maker's grip on how people interact with computers.
China Snow Batters Crops
Snow that has been battering central China has dealt an extremely serious blow to winter crops, according to a top agricultural official. It is raising the likelihood that future shortages would exaggerate already surging food prices. Regions hit by the worst winter storms in 50 years provide the bulk of China's winter fruit and vegetables. The full magnitude of the losses were unclear and much depends on the weather in the coming days. The impact of the snow disaster in southern China on winter crop production is extremely serious.

California Salmon Population Dwindles
Climate change could be a factor in an 88 percent decline from five years ago. The number of chinook salmon returning to California's Central Valley has reached a near record low, pointing to an unprecedented collapse that could lead to severe restrictions on West Coast salmon fishing this year. This is according to federal fisher regulators. The sharp drop in chinook, or king salmon returning from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in the Sacramento River and its tributaries this past fall is part of broader decline in wild salmon runs in rivers across the West. Only about 90,000 returning adult salmon were counted in the Central Valley in 2007, the second lowest number on record. The population of 277,000 in 2006 and 804,000 five years ago gives you an idea of the drop in numbers of salmon.
Tailor-Made 40XL Jacket For Giraffe
This post is dedicated to Sandy.
In the Oakland Zoo, Tiki, like many a lady of a certain age, feels the cold these days. you see Tiki is a giraffe. So workers at the Zoo are having a custom fit coat made to keep the giraffe cozy this winter. She is 18 and this is a venerable age for giraffes. Tiki is suffering the effects of age. She already gets regular visits from the chiropractor, a masseuse and an acupuncturist. Can you believe it? Those are accepted treatments for horses, at least in the San Francisco Bay area. They provide a gentle way to treat animals without drugs.acupuncture helps with her shoulder and withers. But the Bat area winter chills had baffled the keepers of the African mammal. At 13 feet tall, she was too tall to be herded into a stall and have regular horse blankets she might get tangles in. So they got in touch with a horse blanket designer who agreed to donate her services to tailor a coat for Tiki. It is a tasteful forest green and features a removable liner for those inbetween das. The designer had to climb a ladder to get measurements but the result? A 40 extra, extra long jacket :0)
