Lightning Struck

The other night we had a terrific thunder and lightning storm. We had an inch of rain in the rain gauge when we got up. But about midnight it woke me up and I started unplugging the computer and antenna and anything else that could get hit. I had to shut all the windows too and our little dog, Holly, was really scared. I heard one boom of lightning that sounded like it hit close by and today we found out it hit a tree and split it just 3 houses from us. I could tell it was close and it scared me enough I just jumped in bed after going back to sleep.

Mexican Night

Tonight was Mexican night. We went to our favorite restaurant in a nearby neighboring town. We had great enchildas and tacos with sour cream and salsa. I love ripe olives on mine but my husband hates them. He doesn't know what he is missing. I had something called a K Special that has lots of meat, green peppers, ripe olives and onions rolled up in a flour tortilla with melted cheese on top and bits of green onion stems. Add the sour cream and sauce and "Olay" it was great. Our favorite waitress is coming back next week too. She just had a little boy to go with the little 2 yr old girl they had first. We'll be happy to see her.

Great Rain

We are getting a great rain. It is coming almost straight down. We really need it as the lawns are turning all brown. This is a good soaking rain. There is little thunder and lightning with it so that is all the better. It will sure help the flowers too as we haven't had time to water them. Everything will be green again and the beans in the field need August rains to fill out the pods. It is a beautiful rainy day.

Hummingbirds

It must be time for the hummingbirds to migrate south. We saw our first hummingbird just now. It was the first one since we saw one this Spring. We can't figure out what happened to them. Wondered if they got caught in many of the big storms and tornadoes that we had through the country this spring. We only have one pair of Goldfinch too and they haven't even brought any young ones to the feeders this year. It has been a strange year. Now they are talking a hard winter too so suppose the Robins will be leaving early. I am still seeing some of those around. I wonder if we will see any of the other birds passing through. The Monarch butterflies always pass through too. Won't be long, I suppose.

Took a Trip

Went to Minnesota today and visited with our family there. Held the baby and watched her play. They are so cute at 10 months old. Went to church and out to eat. Both were good. Olympic Volleyball

Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor are the Golden Girls. They struck Gold again when they won their second consecutive gold medals in beach volleyball. They played against two gals from China 21-18 and 21-18. They didn't lose a single set in Beijing. That makes their winning streak 108 matches in a row. Wow! The rains didn't dampen their excitement at winning in the slightest. They wrapped themselves in American flags and went through the rain to the podium for the medal ceremony. Good going girls.

Big Days

Our church is having Big Days on Sunday. They will be having 5k runs and breakfast. Then they will be giving awards to those who ran the races and lunch will be served. After that there will be plenty of games and fun for all. This is to support our wonderful children's ministry called Traction Action. Busses bring in 150-200 children every Wednesday for an hour of fun and Bible study. It will also help support our Youth Extreme program, as well,for the youth. Many businesses have given prizes for this as well as monetary support. Lots of children who have no happy home life are taken away for a few hours of free fun and food. It is a great program. The children really look forward to the bus picking them up each week and fun and treats.

Women's Olympic Basketball

It has been an exciting time watching all the Olympic events. There is so much talent from all the countries involved. But the United States beat South Korea 104 - 60 and it seems Sylvia Fowles and the U.S. women's basketball team were too big for South Korea. Fowles felt she hadn't played well the first two games. She kind of got down on herself. But she scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, so she really contributed to the win for the United States. The Americans face Russia in one semifinal Thursday.

Car Damage

How do you feel about someone hitting your car and doing damage to it and then not letting you know about it? We discovered the other night that our bumper had been hit and hit hard and cracked it almost completely down to the bottom of it on one side. It also damaged the lining inside the bumper by the wheel. It knocked out a whole piece, part of which contained a bolt that held the bumper to the liner. So the bumper was kind of swinging loose. We called the insurance company and took it in and got the estimate and took it in for repair this morning. Lucky for us our insurance pays for a rental car as it will take 2 days to fix. We will have to pay the $250 deductible since they hit us and ran. That makes me mad.

Shingles Vaccination

They have a new vaccination for Shingles prevention. I had my checkup this morning and my doctor advised getting it. So she wrote me a prescription and we stopped at the pharmacy at K-Mart and I got it. Took about 10 minutes in all with insurance check to see how it was covered. If you should get shingles, it will be painless with this vaccination. They are advising it for everyone who had chicken pox as a child over the age of 50 or 60, not sure on that. Anyway I got it. My husband had shingles some years back and it was very painful on his back. It is called Zostavax.

Accident

A family member reported an accident to us last night. An older lady was speeding and hit a woman pushing a wheel chair with her father in it. The car hit the woman so hard from the rear that she landed on the car and then hit the wheel chair and the father flew out and hit his head on the cement. The woman had to have stitches completely down her left leg and the hospital didn't treat her very nicely, we think because she is overweight. They x-rayed her leg but not her hip, something they should have done. She is home recuperating but can't get in and out of bed without help and very sore. The father had his skull cracked in two places and it also broke the lining around the brain in one place. He had a facial fracture also and went into surgery last night at midnight in Rochester, MN and has it was a long surgery. They had to sew up his skull, fix his face and he is all swollen up and is 81 years old. If he survives the next 24 hours, he will live. The woman in the car had the nerve to say to the police that they walked out in front of her. The woman who was hurt then replied to the police, then how come she hit us from the rear? The woman is known for speeding where she shouldn't be and I hope they throw the book at her, as they say and I hope the man doesn't die or she is in even worse trouble. The father had just gotten out of the local hospital the day before and his daughter thought it would be nice to take him for a walk since the weather was perfect yesterday.

Olympics in Beijing

Are you watching the Olympics in Beijing. China did everything to make the air cleaner and make Americans feel more at home. Their Grand Opening was spectacular. Everyone is having a good time. One sad note though, was the man from Minnesota that was killed. I heard this morning his wife is waking up now but she was seriously hurt too and a wonder she didn't die.

Iowa Sweet Corn

We think there is nothing like good old Iowa sweet corn on the cob. We have gotten some really good sweet corn from three different farms and they were all different. We liked one of them better than the rest. But sweet corn is a short season and you get it while you can. Candy corn seems to be the favorite of those raising it. However, if you can find some that is all yellow, it is really the sweetest and best and we got one batch of that. It was delicious.

Great Meatloaf

Meat loaf

1 lb ground beef
Meatloaf


1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp pepper
2/3 cup quick oatmeal
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp salt
1/4 to 1/3 minced onion reconstituted with water over them just to cover while
you put in the other ingredients in a big bowl. I probably use
almost 1/2 cup because I love the onion flavor in it.

Mix altogether and put in a bread pan. Bake 350 about an 1 to 1/4 hours till done. Spray the pan with PAM spray so hardly sticks at all.

I sqirt some catsup on top and kind of spread it around but if you want to stay away from tomatoe, don't do that.

This is out of a newer Better Crocker cookbook and we like it so much I use it all the time. Slices nice and makes wonderful meat for a second meal for us and sandwiches besides.

Doctor Appointments

This seems to be the month for doctor appointments. I have a fasting blood test this morning. They are going to double check for Diabetes 2 along with cholesterol and many other things. Then I will go back next Friday and get the results. I am hoping for very good results. They usually are good but you never know I guess. We love our doctor. She is so understanding and listens to everything you have to say and is so down to earth in telling you things. You feel you can discuss anything with her. That is the kind of doctor it is good to have.

Man Dies After Honeymoon Attack

Now I think this has to be one of the saddest stories I have heard in a long time. The story came out of Wales. A newlywed man was shot on the last day of his Caribbean honeymoon and he died at a British hospital. Morriston Hospital said brain stem tests showed that Benjamin Mullany, who was comatose since he was shot in the head in Antigua last week, was dead. He had been on life support systems. His wife, Catherine Mullany, was shot and killed in the same attack. How very very sad.

Jet Airliner Evacuated After Emergency Landing

There was an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday. The passengers were evacuated by inflatable chutes after a Honolulu-bound airliner made the landing because someone smelled smoke in the cabin. They found no sign of a fire. Six of the passengers, including a child, were examined at the scene for bumps, bruises and other minor injuries. The flight was carrying 188 passengers and 6 crew members tpok off at 8:46 a.m.and a short time later the pilot decided to turn back. It was good there was no fire although the did have some type of smoke or odor in the cabin. I wonder if someone sneaked a cigarette in the restroom? If they did, they sure caused a great deal of trouble.

Beauty School

A friend of mine is really good with hair. She likes to fix the hair of all her friends. I suggested she go to beauty school and become a professional. She thought that was a wonderful idea but she didn't know the first thing about finding a school. Especially, how could she find a school in our area and whether there even are any. Parents Forget 3 Year Old at Airport

Did you ever go somewhere and forget one of your kids? Some friends of our did once. They came to play cards and the kids all went to sleep. They herded 3 of them into the car and went home and called to say they forgot one. We laughed. But this was different. It happened at Ben-Gurion airport in Israel. The Israli couple were going on a European vacation. They remembered to take their duty-free purchases and their l8 suitcases, but forgot their 3 year old daughter at the airport. The couple and their five children were late for a charter flight to Paris on Sunday and made a mad dash to the gate. I can just picture that because we have five children. Then the police found the daughter wandering in the duty-free area of the airport. An airline staffer accompanied her on the next flight to Paris to join her parents. Bet they were really glad to get her back with them.

Meatloaf Makes Great Sandwiches

I just love the wonderful smells of meatloaf baking in the oven. It permeates the whole house with wonderful odors. I love lots of minced onion in mine and I think that is one of the reasons it smells so good. I love onions with anything that they can be used for. But back to the meatloaf. We usually can only eat about half a one or less and I slice it thin enough to make the best sandwiches for at least two days after. There is just nothing like good homemade meatloaf for a great lunch sandwich.

Online Banking seems to be the thing to do today. So I have gotten the papers and am going to get started soon. I do most of my banking by phone. They have a great automated phone system that usually gives me all the answers I need. However, it would be nice to check into the account inbetween by computer and keep up with technology. I don't think I am ready for Bill Paying yet though and besides there is a charge for that and I really don't need it. These days you can have most of your bills automatically paid right out of your checking or savings account so I don't feel I need it. But it is another step of progress for me to get online with my banking.

Clouds

It is a kind of strange morning today. It is supposed to be a nice 80 degree day but the sky is all full of strange looking clouds. Some look like those rolling white wind clouds. Some look like it could rain anytime. It is 20 degrees cooler than it was yesterday morning at this time. The sun was out for awhile but it is gone now. I see the tops of the trees are really moving so there must be quite a wind and since it is cooler it has to be from the northwest. I will have to go check out our little windmill in the yard and see which direction it is coming from. I like it a bit cooler though. Humidity and heat are just not my thing.

Holly is Limping

Holly, our little Boston Terrier, is hurting somewhere. I don't know if she jumped off a chair or the bed wrong but she is walking kind of slow. She is paper trained out in the garage and she is walking down the steps kind of slow this morning and she won't jump up into your lap. She is 9 years old, and almost 10 so I wonder if she has gotten some arthritis in one of the knees she had operated on a couple years ago. They are almost like people in their illnesses. She has thyroid problems, so takes a pill a day for that. It seems if you have a pet long enough, you go through all kinds of things with them, much like yourself or kids.

Morgan Freeman Seriously Injured

Morgan freeman was seriously injured in a car crash on Monday. He was hospitalized in serious condition. The car he was driving left a rural road in the Mississippi Delta and flipped several times. He is 71 years old and has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage, but he is in good spirits. He was airlifted to the regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. They said he would have a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage. He was lucky and he's looking forward to a full recovery. He could have easily been killed.

A Branson Vacation

Have you ever been to Branson? It is the new Nashville with all its very talented stars that have made their permanent homes there. My sister and brother-in-law used to live there and they went to all the shows a lot because they had an antique business in Branson and got lots of discount tickets. Nine Climbers Feared Dead on K-2

I was not even sure what K-2 was until I read that it was the world's second highest mountain and is located in Pakistan. There was a terrible avalanche that cut the ropes of at least nine climbers. These ropes were used to cross a treacherous wall of ice. They are feared to be dead. There are several other climbers missing too so they have started a desperate rescue effort on the peak. There were eight different groups who scaled K-2's summit on Friday, making a total of 22 people, mostly foreigners. As they were coming down, the avalanche carried away ropes fixed l,148 feet below the peak. Thus sweeping some climbers to their deaths and stranding others at a height where they would likely die of exposure. This is a terrible disaster.

I have the worst feet. They are consumed by arthritis and I had to see a specialist foot doctor. I got orthotics and he told me to get a certain number New Balance shoes. They need to be sure to have a roll bar in them for arch support because I do not have any arches left in my feet. Lawn Mowing

With all the rains we had last week, the lawn is really growing. I guess we have to mow it again tomorrow. That is not my favorite job. In fact, I hate it. I mowed our lawn at home a great deal when I was young and our lawn mower was really an old heavy one. That is probably why it is not my favorite job. I guess the wind is supposed to go northwest tomorrow or tonight so it won't be so humid. That will help and I hope there is a good cool breeze for a change.

Hip Problems

Have you ever had hip problems? It can be very painful. I have known lots of people who have had their hips replaced and they tell me it is much easier than having a knee replaced. I have had both knees replaced so I guess I am past the worst of it. But now my husband is having hip problems. And I wonder if he may have to have one replaced. He can't pick up anything heavy, such as the garbage bag without a lot of pain. I got him a doctor appointment so we can find out the source of the pain on Thursday, I hope.

Boy, what I couldn't do with that kind of money. People are flocking to the box office to see the Batman blockbuster. It hauled in $43.8 million to rank as Hollywood's top movie for the third straight weekend. Coming in second was "The Mummy, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" at $42.4 million. Now really, folks, that is a great deal of money for two movies. And now "Dark Knight" has soared to a $394.9 million in just 17 days. Warner Brothers has got to be smiling all the way to the bank. They figure it will go past $400 million sometime today or tomorrow. The previous $400 million record holder was "Shrek 2", which hit that mark in 43 days. Wow!

Monday is Wash Day

Well this Monday was wash day. I did two big loads and got them all hung up. My husband helped fold all the towels so I could post and that is a huge help. He also put away all the clean dishes out of the dishwasher. And he helps get the table set for supper and do some of the preparations too. He will even cook if it is something he knows something about. It is sure a big help.

Wash the Car

That is all I hear these days. We have got to wash the car. It is filthy but it rained again this morning. I suggested backing it out onto the driveway and letting God wash it but I didn't get far with that suggestion. I guess one of these nice days when they aren't predicting rain, I will have to take it down to the local car wash and get the real good wash job. They have dryers to dry it too as you drive out and it is the best car wash we have ever had in this area. I love it.

That is the name of the big black lab dog next door. Isn't that the strangest name you ever heard of? They kind of run the letters together so it comes out D-ogie. He is such a sweet natured dog and he loves lots of attention. Whenever we go away he runs to the fence to greet us so I walk over and pet him and throw his ball for him. He lets me know when he is ready to stop. He has a good shady place and a good building to get into in bad weather. We really enjoy the neighbor's dog.

My Little Great Granddaughter

She is such a little doll. She is pulling herself up all over and the next thing we will hear she is walking. She is keeping her Mommy pretty busy already for quite awhile trying to keep up with her. Just wait till she walks. Little ones then begin to run and I think they run till they are 10 years old. That will be lots of fun for her Mom to keep up with her. Great exercise, huh? She will keep her Dad busy too when he gets home from work. They are so much fun and it is so neat to get pictures of her on the internet and keep up with her progress.

The Viking Fans Don't Seem to Want Brett Favre

There seems to be a lot of not so favorable signs going up about Brett by Viking fans. They have so much hatred for the Packers that it is blinding them. I think that is carrying their loyalty too far. Why wouldn't they want a great quarterback like Favre? They could use a good quarterback and they have a chance at a great one. What is the problem? I know Green Bay offered Brett $10 million to retire and not play for anyone else. He ought to take it. He is 38 years old and that is getting old for football.

There is A Good Side to High Gas Prices

I know. You say I must be nuts but there is a good side. It has cut down on the deaths on the highways. With more people driving less, and less cars on the road, there have been less fatal accidents. That is a good benefit in my book. I was glad to read about that. The death rate has dropped 9% in motor vehicle deaths and that is a good thing. I do notice gas prices are slowly but surely creeping downward for a change instead of always upward.
