Family Visit

We had a surprise visit today from our oldest son and his family. The grandkids are growing so tall and are all young people now. Two are in college and two are in high school. They were on their way to see a basketball game in Minneapolis between the Lakers and the Timberwolves. The Lakers are winning so they are happy, I know, as they are Laker fans.

They are going to the Mall of America too so that should be fun for them all tomorrow. It is a good weather weekend so they will have a good time. It was very good to have a visit, though short, with them. We talked fast :0). It has been a mostly sunny day but they got out of here in time as there is supposed to be a little freezing rain tonight and maybe a little snow too.

Custom Embroidery

I have always loved embroidery on pillow cases, t-shirts, baby bibs and many other items. My daughter made an embroidered family tree which we have framed in the living room. Now it is easy to obtain custom embroidered items at Threadsmith.com. They will customize any design you choose or you can customize a template. It would be great to have golf shirts made up for the men in the family who are golfers. I would love to have that done and they would look so good. They provide quick work and fast delivery. It is so much quicker and easier than doing it yourself. There are no minimum orders or setup fees so that saves you money too. I can give them for their birthdays which are coming up soon and they will be so surprised.

Afgan President says Troops Killed 16 Civilians

Latest news out of Kabul, Afghanistan is that President Hamid Karzai has condemned a U.S. operation he says killed 16 Afghan civilians. Hundreds of villagers denounced the American military during an angry demonstration. Karzai said that the killing of innocent Afghans is strengthening the terrorists. What many people don't realize is that civilian casualties are often a part of war. It just can't be helped and often many of them are the enemy as well. They join the terrorists and are not suspected of being the enemy too.

He also announced that his Ministry of Defense sent a draft of a technical agreement to Washington. He also sent it to NATO headquarters. It seeks to give Afghanistan more oversight over U.S. Military operations. I doubt that is a very good idea. The president's criticism follows a U.S. raid early last Saturday that American officials said killed 15 armed militants. Afghan officials said those killed were civilians. Demonstrators rallied in Laghman province Sunday, near the site of the raid.

Deadly Storms Pound France and Spain

French authorities deployed 10,000 clean-up and recovery workers and Spain let evacuated villagers return home Sunday a day after deadly storms pounded southwest France and northeast Spain. At least 12 deaths were reported by authorities in Spain that were linked to the storm. This included four children crushed as a sports facility buckled in high winds in Barcelona.

At least six people died in France, including a couple who died of carbon-monoxide poisoning from a generator they had turned on overnight in a power outage in the Dordogne region. You could hear the chainsaws buzzing and clearing crews fanned out on both sides of the french-Spanish border as workers but through felled trees on homes, power lines, rail tracks and roadways and took away the debris Sunday.

China reports Second Bird Flu Death

A 27 year old woman in northern China has died from bird flue in the country's second death from the disease this year. The woman, surnamed Zhang, lived in Jinan city of Shandong province and died last Saturday after falling sick on January 5. The ministry reported this on their website late last Sunday. The notice did not say how she contracted the virus. Hopefully, they will be able to track down the source.

A 19 year old woman died earlier this month, from the bird flu virus in a Beijing hospital after contact with ducks in a market in a neighboring province. That was the first death from bird flu since February last year. Health officials worry that the H5N1bird flu virus could mutate into a form that could spread easily among people. China, which raises more poultry than any other country, has vowed to aggressively fight the virus.

Hordes of Caterpillars Cause Havoc

This sounds like something out of one of those nightmare type movies. News from of Monrovia, Liberia reported that voracious caterpillars are destroying crops and prompting terrified villagers to flee their homes in northern Liberia. This is described as the West African country's worst plague in 30 years. We have never had anything like this here and I am so glad of it.

The Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization said the 1-inch-long caterpillars, described by villagers as "black, creeping and hairy", are advancing in the tens of millions. Yes, millions. They are devouring vegetation and food crops. Can you imagine? Makes your skin crawl just thinking about it. The invasion is likely to spread to neighboring Guinea, Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast unless it is contained, according to entomologist, Winfred Hammond, who is the agency's representative in Liberia.

Peanut Butter Products Recalled

Seriously, it is getting so you don't know what is safe to eat anymore. They are recalling all kinds of products that have peanut butter in them. We love peanut butter and use Jif all the time in a jar and I am not afraid of it at all. But they use so much between little crackers and snacks. This has got to hurt the big businesses really bad that have to recall all their products when they aren't sure whether they are safe or not. Last I heard 6 people had died of salmonella from it. I know that is a deadly germ because we used to have hogs and when a sow got it, she died too and all her pigs. They say another 470 people in 43 states are sick and 90 had to be put in the hospital.

Both General Mills and Kellogg are recalling various products. Kellogg recalled 16 products last week. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed contamination in a single package of Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter. Other food companies and retailers have been recalling products with peanut butter in them just in case they could be contaminated.

Boat Capsizes Off Virginia Coast

Police reported that two people were killed in a Chesapeake Bay boating accident off Virginia Beach last Wednesday and have been identified as Arizona residents. They died after the 18 foot aluminum boat capsized in cold, choppy water. The six boaters departed from the Lynnhaven Boat ramp and Beach House and phoned in a distress call to the Coast Guard shortly before 9 a.m.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two of them and the others were recovered by boat. The National Weather Service said the water temperature was 46 degrees at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It had also issued a small craft advisory with waves up to 5 feet high and strong winds. Now tell me, why would anyone go out with a weather warning like that? That was crazy and 2 lost their lives because of it.

Fannie Mae Bans Evictions of Renters

This has to be good news for a lot of renters who are staying in their homes awaiting foreclosure. The mortgage finance company, Fannie Mae, said last Tuesday that it has adopted a policy allowing renters to remain in their homes even if their landlord enters foreclosure.

The new policy will allow residents of about 4,000 properties to sign new leases with Fannie Mae while the property is up for sale. Fannie Mae's chief operating officer, Michael Williams, said in a statement that the change should help bring a measure of stability to communities impacted by high foreclosure rates. Freddie Mac, sibling mortgage financier, is working on a similar policy. That is good news for renters who expected to have to move from their homes soon.

Gun Goes Off in Utah Restroom

I don't know about you but I can't help but laugh at this one. It was reported by police that a man's gun fell out of its holster while he pulled up his pants after using the bathroom at a Carl's Jr. restaurant Tuesday. The man escaped with a few cuts on his arm, but the toilet made out much worse. The gun fired when it hit the floor and shattered the toilet.

A few shards of porcelain cut the man's arm, and a woman in an adjacent restroom, who was frightened by the noise, reported she was having chest pain. Both people were checked at the scene and released. The Police said they confiscated the 26 year old man's firearm while they review the incident. The man had a concealed weapons permit. No charges are being filed.

IRS Expands Free Online Filing Program

Did you know that the fastest way to get a tax refund is to file your federal tax returns electronically? Now with tax season approaching, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday that it is expanding a program that enables taxpayers to file returns online at no charge. They are promising refunds much faster than for those who mail in paper forms.

Taxpayers who file electronically can receive refunds in as few as 10 days, compared to six to eight weeks for those filing paper returns. The IRS e-file system becomes available Friday. About 70 percent of all taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $56,000 or less, can use a Free File computer program that walks them through the filing process step by step, much like a tax preparer would. Those taxpayers with higher incomes can also fill out and file their tax forms online.

Last year, nearly 90 million taxpayers filed online. That is about 58 percent of all returns. The IRS Oversight Board, which oversees the IRS has set a goal of having 80 percent of taxpayers file online by 2012. You can find the IRS e-file system at www.irs.gov.

This daily updated website not only gives you all the latest news, but they also give you the latest on music, movies, events and also Denver Restaurants. It is a fun website that features a listing of the various restaurants by cuisine or you can search for a restaurant name or go through the critics picks to find a special restaurant. They also review several restaurants daily and you can check those out. I really enjoy the Denver Food Blog because it gives you entertaining information about the foods available in Denver in an enjoyable fashion to read. Check them out before you go looking for a good restaurant.

Floods in Fiji Kill 6

Flooding in Fiji is very serious and has left six people dead and sent thousands seeking emergency shelter. In Fiji, more severe rain storms are expected in coming days according to officials on Monday. There were six people killed in the western district of the Pacific Nation's main island of Veti Levu. Four of them drowned in floodwaters and two were caught in a landslide.

There have been four days of torrential rains that have flooded the towns of Nadi, Ba, Sigatoka and Labasa and many rural villages. This has forced more than 6,000 people into emergency shelters. That has to be a horrible situation. I can't imagine what it would be like for so many people to be flooded out of their homes. There seem to be so many awful disasters happening in the world just lately.

Pirate's Body Washes Ashore With $153,000

First we heard that 5 pirates had drowned after receiving a $3 million dollar ransom and now the body of one of the Somali pirates who drowned, has washed onshore with $153,000 in cash. That goes to show you that you can't take it with you, no matter how hard you try. Another group of pirates has promised to soon free a Ukrainian arms ship.

Those five pirates drowned Friday when their small boat capsized after they had received a reported $3 million ransom for releasing a Saudi oil tanker. Local resident, Omar Abdi Hassan said one of the bodies had been found on a beach near the coastal town of Haradhere and relatives were searching for the other four. The one that washed onshore had a plastic bag in his pocket with the $153,000 in it. It sure didn't do him any good did it? Actually, it probably helped weigh him down so he drowned faster, I bet. Crime doesn't pay.

Chevez Investigates U.S. Embassy Official

President Hugo Chavez said Saturday, he may expel a top U.S. Embassy official for allegedly plotting against his government from Puerto Rico. Venezuela's socialist leader said he has information that leaders of the political opposition were meeting with U.S. advisers in Puerto Rico to discuss how to prevent a referendum on term limits from passing.

Chavez said he was investigating the possible presence of a U.S. Embassy official in Caracas at this meeting. He did not name the official. He said if he confirms it, he will throw him out of the country. He is almost paranoid, don't you think? He can be a real threat to the United States.

Bus Crash in Peru Kills at Least 33

A bus ran off a slick mountain road into a ravine in northern Peru on Saturday, killing at least 33 people according to the police. When the vehicle plunged off the highway about 550 miles north of the capital of Lima, it was rainy and pre-dawn conditions that made for poor visibility. The bus was traveling to the northern city of Querocoto. That is so sad a happening. I am sure many were injured as well.

USS Geroge H. W. Bush Commissioned

It was a big day when the USS George H.W. Bush was commissioned and we watched the ceremony on television. It was quite a site to see all those sailors going on board to start it up. It was the perfect gift for an old Navy flier: 1.092 feet of flattop. President George W. Bush asked "what do you give a guy who has been blessed and has just about everything he has ever needed?" "Well, an aircraft carrier." That is what President Bush said from aboard the Navy's newest ship.

It is a steel-gray vessel longer than three football fields and built at a cost of $6.2 billion. It was commissioned on Saturday with its namesake, the 41st president, and other members of the Bush family on hand for the ceremonies at Naval Station Norfolk. It is one of the Nimitz class of nuclear powered aircraft carriers, the largest warships in the world. It is 95 tons of aluminum and steel and will carry nearly 6,000 of the finest sailors and Marines in the world. She represents the craftsmanship of many skilled builders, and thousands of hours of preparation. Fantastic!

Yelowstone Quakes Set Off Cyber Alarms

An intense study is going on with the University of Utah scientists busily analyzing a "swarm" of 900 earthquakes that have struck Yellowstone National Park since December 26. I heard one man on the news say if a gigantic volcano should erupt in Yellowstone it could endanger the entire United States. Frightening isn't it? However, I guess someone has put some scary stuff on the Internet advising people to flee but those studying the earthquakes say they take the public safety very seriously. There never was any damage and there is nothing that indicates a potential catastrophe.

However, this swarm is noteworthy for its intensity and the speed with which it appeared, then dissipated, around Tuesday. The underground movement of superheated water is the suspected cause, but regular old tectonic activity could be playing a role as well. The strongest registered 3.9 on Dec. 28 and was felt by park personnel 30 miles from its epicenter at Old Faithful. But many people in Salt Lake City, 300 miles to the south claimed to have felt it too. That is very unusual. One report was 1,300 miles away and said they felt it. It has been 50 years since the last major earthquake in Yellowstone.

Caroline Kennedy's Friends Lift Veil Of Privacy

It seems all we hear on the news these days is that Caroline Kennedy wants Hillary Clinton's Senate job. It doesn't seem to matter that she doesn't have the experience, just that she has the Kennedy name. Now she has also come up in the news when community groups and the Board of Education were caught in a dispute over an arts program, and education officials brought in someone to fix it - Caroline Kennedy. She asked many probing questions and under her prompting, a compromise was reached.

Chief Executive officer of the Fund for Public Schools said that people were pushing themselves back from the table and folding their arms. Caroline was very good at defusing the situation. She has a very easy style about her but she is very sharp. This episode is an intriguing glimpse into how Kennedy might fill the role of U.S. senator if she is appointed to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton. In a series of interviews with The Associated Press, friends and colleagues of Kennedy painted a picture of a reserved but intelligent and tenacious woman who writes her own speeches and who, despite her vast wealth, still takes the subway. I am not sold on her. How about you?

Congestive Heart Failure

Our sister-in-law has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and has now been put on oxygen full-time. Grace is in the alzheimers ward but is going to be moved out into the outer area now as she no longer can walk and is in a wheelchair full-time. That way she is no longer a flight risk. It is hard to watch someone go downhill. Her heart is working hard and at only 55% of the time so she doesn't get enough oxygen on her own. Her kidneys are starting to fail which means her body is beginning to shut down for the last time. She just passed he 85th birthday on New Years day. It is sad for her family to watch her deteriorate. The alzheimers was bad enough but now the congestive heart failure looks like it is going to end her life.

Fenphedra

Before you go out shopping for Fenphedra, be sure to look up this website and read all about it. It sounds like it would contain Ephedra, but it does not. However, in reading up on it I found that it is much to strong for the average person. You can find a list of the ingredients listed right on this website and make your own decision as to whether or not it is the diet pill for you. You only have one body and one life to live, so why not do it safely and investigate this product to be sure it is okay for you.

Cooper Tires and Rotation

We got a new set of Cooper tires at last. The original tires were still on the car and they were getting thin. Winter was coming on and we felt we needed all the tread we could get during the icy, snowy winters we have here. So we went out and bought 4 new Cooper tires. They have a good reputation and decided they would work best for us.

Well, as you all know, you are supposed to rotate your tires every 7-8000 miles. And guess what, we totally forgot about that. So this morning I am taking the car in to have those new tires rotates. Better late than never. We are in the midst of the worst winter we have had in several years. Lots of freezing rain, sleet and snow has hit us from all directions along with lots of wind. You need all the help you can get and we feel a lot more safe with good tires on the car.

Are You A Big Bopper Fan?

Remember "the day the music died", when the plane went down and Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper were killed? That happened right here in our area in February. Every year the Surf Ballroom has a big celebration and brings back as many of the old groups and singers who were there that night. I believe it will be 50 years ago next month on February 3.

Last year, they exhumed the Big Bopper and did an autopsy to be sure the plane crash injuries were what killed him. It was just that. But now the story is that his son has the old casket and he is going to auction it off on eBay and see if he can sell it. He wants to put on a music show to help preserve the memory of his dad. He was born 3 months after his dad died so he never knew him at all. Anyone out there want to buy a casket, a piece of history?

Well now it turns out that someone just got that story started and it took off like wildfire. He wouldn't mind selling it, however, if it could be put on display in a rock 'n roll museum or have a statue erected to preserve the memory of his dad, he said. He would sell it for that purpose but not on eBay.

Wedding Hydrangea

It doesn't matter what season of the year that you are planning a wedding, you will find a huge variety of wedding hydrangea that will match your colors. They make gorgeous centerpieces and come in so many colors. When you order them, they are cut right at the farm where they are grown. Then they overnight express them right to your door absolutely free so that they arrive as fresh as the moment they were cut.

Perhaps you would like to have roses or calla lilies, as the style seems to be lately. Several of our grandchildren had calla lilies in their weddings and they were very beautiful. You can choose flowers by color, season or type of flower from the huge listing on their website. And no matter which you choose, they will give you a 100 percent guarantee that they will be fresh.

Steam Tray

I think when I go shopping for groceries, I am going to get the ingredients for what my brother calls a "Steam Tray". You take at least a 9 x 13 pan and cut up potatoes in it. Then you can add some cutup carrots, sliced cabbage, mushrooms if you like them, Kielbasa sausage cut up in bite size pieces and sweet onions cut and quartered. Then add cauliflower and brocolli, cut up and pour over it all about a cup of hot chicken broth.

Cover all this with aluminum foil and put in the oven about 350 until all the vegetables are done. It makes a tasty dish that is very good as leftovers and it feeds several people at once or if there are just two of you, like us, we have it again for a supper or two, depending on how much we ate the first time. It smells so good. Salt and pepper it a little before pouring on the chicken broth and you have one big wonderful hot dish.

HDTV is Almost Here - Are you Ready?

It is almost time for television to go digital. Are you ready for the big change over? Our local television station gave us a test the other day. They shut off their regular analog programming and went to high definition only and 2 of our 3 television sets went black. Many people are buying new televisions such as the one pictured here. We got a new 42" flat screen and it is already so much more clear than the old one.

However, if you are on cable or satellite, you don't have to worry because your televisions will work fine. Your antenna will no longer work unless you get a converter box and hook it up. You can get them at Wal-Mart for $55 and install them yourself. The Government was sending out coupons but they ran out of money and are asking for more funding. A friend who got a coupon took it to Wal-Mart and the converter box only cost her $10. That was a pretty good deal, don't you think?

Buy Auto Insurance Online

The auto insurance comes up for renewal in February. So what do I do? Do I run all over checking with companies to see if I can get a good deal? Or do I pick up the phone and the yellow pages and try and call as many companies as I can locate in the area and see what they will do for me? No, all I need to do is buy auto insurance online. It is so easy. They have all the insurance companies right there and all I need to do is fill in my zip code. Then I answer a few questions and from 15 different companies, I will get 4 rates. I can then choose the one I want and once I buy online, I will get instant proof of insurance. This is especially important as in our state if you don't have proof of insurance with you, it is a very large fine. This is so easy, anyone can do it.

Grandchildren and Christmas

What is better than a grandchild at Christmas time unless it is 2 grandchildren at Christmas time. This happy grandfather is the proud grandfather of two little ones who arrived just 13 days apart last year. Now they are one year old and able to open presents and have a great time for Christmas. You can tell they are very happy to be with their grandparents again this Christmas. Little Emry had to travel clear from Texas and Kaelyn came from Minnesota but they all got together and we got to see them too. Such fun.

Flu Bug

We had a very nice Christmas dinner and celebration at our daughter and son-in-law's home on Saturday. Everyone had a great time, lots of wonderful food and then everyone took what seemed like millions of pictures. We played some Bingo for prizes and a good time was had by all. We had fun watching Emry, who is one year old walking all over. They look so little when they first begin walking. Kaelyn kept up with him or I should say, staying away from him, by crawling about as fast as he could walk. She is in a hurry to get where she is going and doesn't want to take time to stand up and walk there. For her it is faster to crawl and she can really go too. One of these days she will be running where she wants to go and it won't be long, I bet.

Well the next day, Mr. Flu bug showed up and it went right through two families, adults and children alike. One daughter-in-law made it home and then got sick too. It seemed to hit everyone but our daughter who is busy taking care of her family as they are almost all sick. Yesterday a couple more got sick. It sure is a shame that the flu bug has to come along and spoil the fun. Since one family is home from Texas, they have had the flu too last week but Emry is feverish again. It sure is no fun. We wish them a speedy recovery and good health from now on in 2009.
