Doctor Appointment
I Went to my doctor appointment today and they took off all the bandages and told me all about the bones in my hand. In a few words, they are a mess. I have a beautiful navy blue/black velcro splint to wear now for a month while this surgery heals. Then iby Monday they will call me with my next surgery date which should be during the first 2 weeks of June. I have no cartilege left in a major portion of my hand and one bone is almost completely gone. They will fuse my wrist in outpatient surgery and then it will be about a month to heal. The doctor feels this will take care of the carpal tunnel so that I shouldn't have to have that surgery later. They will use cadaver bones to replace those I don't have anymore. The other alternative was to harvest bone from my hip, which would cause great pain, 5 days in the hospital, trouble walking and generally not a nice thing to look forward to. The doctor said himself, if it was his hand, he would go for the cadaver bones. He said Dad and I needed to be in full agreement to go with the cadaver bones, and we are. We discussed all the negative publicity about bad bones some people got awhile back but he said at my age, he didn't feel it would be a problem and he was sure the would be healthy bones I would receive. I need to gain the strength back in my right hand after being immobile for a week but I am typing this with both hands again and doing fine.
