This is the day alot of part-time workers have been waiting for. Iowa finally passed a law raising the minimum wage to $6.40 beginning today. It has been $5.15 so this should make quite a difference, however the smaller businesses are not happy about it. They feel they will either have to raise their prices, or cut back on their help.
By January 1, 2008, it will go to $7.25 which is quite a jump too. Actually I have heard that employers and workers say the initial raise itself is not really a big deal since most of the state's workers already earn more. But the second increase worries them more. Some businesses may have to close earlier than they did before. Such as closing at 9, may change to closing at 5. There are fast food workers that are really excited about the increase and I am one of them.
