Goldfinch, Hummingbirds and more

We had to get a new hummingbird feeder this morning as the old one was leaking the syrup right out of it. And the wind was blowing so hard the last few days that it blows the syrup out too. I put the new one up this morning and there was a little green hummingbird on it about noon. That is the first one we have seen. We have only seen 2 goldfinch so far. It is funny that the birds are not returning as early this year as they usually do. By now we should have feeders full of them. It is strange. We also had to seed the grass where it froze out last winter or the landlord ripped it out moving snow. We had so much snow this year.

The Orioles are Back

The orioles are the most beautiful orange and black bird, more orange. Saw one the day before yesterday so hurried to the store for oranges. Last year, we saw our first one so my husband put a nail in each of the two posts out in the yard and cut the heads off them. That way you can jam half an orange right over the nail. It had been two days so took new ones out last night and they had eaten all the pulp so will have to change them almost daily I think. Bought a bag of oranges last night and it is shocking how much they have gone up in price but it was a good sized bag and will last probably 2 weeks at least. They also like grape jam so if you run out of oranges, put a spoonful of grape jam in the dry orange and they will eat that too. It is amazing to see these beautiful birds along with dozens of Goldfinch. I filled the seed bag again last night too because with 9 birds feeding at a time, it didn't take them long to get it way down.
