Bee Crisis - Higher Food Prices
The mysterious decline in honey bees could cause food prices to rise even more unless they find out the cause and turn it around. Where there are no bees, there are no crops, one North Carolina grower said. He has already cut his cucumber acreage in half because of the lack of bees available to rent. So much depends on the honey bees. About three quarters of flowering plants rely on birds, bees and other pollinators to help them reproduce. Bee pollination is responsible for $15 billion annually in crop value and that is a great deal! Beekeepers began reporting losing 30 percent to 90 percent of their hives in 2006. This is not a joke. It is very serious. They are calling it Colony Collapse Disorder.
