Rain and the Crops

We have been having a little rain quite regularly. The corn has really grown and will be knee high by the 4th of July for sure. It is so neat to see the bean fields coming up too. The farmers put in a lot of work and had to do it inbetween rains, but they got it done. The crops look good around here. I feel so sorry for all those people in Texas who have been washed away, losing homes, cars, even family. We are blessed that we haven't had any of that.

Rain

We are having lots of rain today. It is always good to get the Spring rains to settle the earth. It is getting rid of the snow that has turned to ice. The yard is a mess and I have to figure out a way to get it cleaned up. The neighbors leaves all blew onto my yard. They are everywhere and very thick. It's nice to have Spring finally.

Wintertime

We have had a very long fall.  It seems like all the leaves on everyone's trees are in my yard.  They are about 6 inches deep.  I have never seen anything quite like it.  We have been having above normal temperatures but now it looks like it is going to change.  The temperatures are going to go down to wintertime temperatures.  They predict rain nearly every day this week.  But when it gets down in the teens I don't think it will be rain.  It is much more likely to be snow.  I am not looking forward to it. People are putting up their Christmas lights and many are turned on. It is so pretty.

Sleet and Rain

Just got through with another bout of heavy rain and then sleet.  Now it has stopped again but it is the calm before the storm.  Schools west of us about 30 miles closed early due to the rain changing to snow. Heard one town is already getting snow.  We are not supposed to get much, an inch or two but it is April.  We are way below normal in temperatures.  It was 35 and now it is 34 degrees.  Very overcast and cloudy.  Have used the lights a lot during the daytime this week.  I gave the neighbor a ride uptown and boy did it rain. They say we need about 3 weeks more rain before it will soak in deep enough to stop the drought.  I guess the rain just sits in the first few layers like a sponge and doesn't soak on down for weeks.  It needs to get down to the aquifers too so that we will have plenty of water in the wells.

Severe Storms

We have had hardly any rain for a very long time.  We are in deep drought and could use as much as 16 inches to soak down into the ground to be normal.  All the crops are out already and the elevators look bare.  Now the weatherman says it is going to warm up tomorrow.  It was 20 this morning.  Then we are to have severe storms starting in mid afternoon.  We could have strong winds, hail and even tornadoes are possible.  I sure hope that doesn't happen.  Quite a few years ago, a town 17 miles away from us was hit by an F5 tornado in October so it is completely possible.  I hope we just get a good soaking rain.  We sure need it.

Is This Spring or Not?

My gosh, yesterday it was warm and beautiful. There was hardly any wind until later in the day. Our neighbors put up a tent like gazebo and were enjoying it immensely and then they had to take it down because the wind came up so strong. Not only that but the temperature started dropping and it was down right cold last night and it is only 49 degrees today at 4:10 pm CST. I saw some rain drops on the window just a bit ago and they are talking a few snow flakes. I went to the grocery store and got out my gloves (that I had put away) and my warmer jacket and it felt very good. I wish the weather would make up its mind.

Rain and Storms

We had all kinds of thunderstorm warning last night and when the rain came, it rained really hard for quite awhile. We got a little over half an inch in no time. It came from the right direction to water our flower bed very well. I am so glad of that as I didn't want to drag out the hose. It has been so hot but now it is pleasantly cool this morning. I am sure the humidity is down too and that really helps.

Rain and Fog

We are really getting the rain now. It is taking down the snow banks quickly. But one thing about it is that it is causing thick fog. It is worse tonight than it was this morning. It was supposed to clear up by noon but it has gotten worse instead of better. It is about 34 degrees so at least it isn't freezing on everything.

Thunderstorms

We had 89 degrees today and it has been cool up until yesterday. This is too hot and causes severe thunderstorms to occur. We went to the next town about 20 miles away to eat and left all our windows open because it was stifling inside and our little dog, Holly, was panting even with fans running.

It began to rain as we finished eating and got into the car with rain drops the size of quarters. As we drove home, we got into heavier rain with the largest rain drops and by the time we got home it was dry. We didn't get any rain at all. We could really use it but I am glad it didn't rain in the windows and wet the carpet, etc. We always unplug the antenna too just in case of lightning because we have been hit in the past.
Holly has finally cooled off and cool breezes are now blowing through the house. It will be about 25 degrees cooler tomorrow and we are supposed to get rain Saturday and Sunday. Our flowers could use it.

Fog

Carl Sandburg, the poet, once wrote a poem that said in the first line "THE fog comes on little cat feet". Well the fog moved in on us last night and it is really dense. Water is dripping off everything outside. It sounds like rain lightly falling on the roof of the garage. The grass and flowers can surely use the moisture. We did get a bit of rain early last evening and that will help the corn fill in the ears. It is too early for frost yet and the farmers are hoping we won't have an early frost. But with the cold night temperatures, things are not looking good. It could be an early winter in the midwest. I read that the Farmers Almanac said it would be a "numbing" winter. That isn't good with the prices of heating your home and they just sent us a notice with our last bill that everything would be going up again. We are thankful, though, for a warm home.

Look at the Rain

Good grief, Charley Brown! Is it ever going to stop raining? It has been raining every day now for days and nights. If it wasn't for the rainbow and God's promise never to send another flood like in the days of Noah, I'd hire someone to build me an ark. I have been watching a little news and see Ohio is under water now. Poor Oklahoma is drowning and Minnesota got hit really hard. There are bridges out and roads washed away and in Winona, the houses are sliding down into the river. I am so glad we are on flat land where it runs away and no rivers nearby but I sure feel sorry for those who are flooded out of there homes or watched them slide into the Mississippi. I really can't begin to imagine how bad they feel.

Friday - At Last

Here it is the end of the week already. Now that I look back, it went really quickly. PayPerPost kept me really busy posting and it was so much fun. Looking for another exciting day today. Went out and put fresh oranges out for the orioles and it is jusst over 50 degrees out and cold! They say rain is headed at us from the Northwest and it is beginning to look like it too. Holly will be upset as she does NOT like the thunder, lightning and rain hitting the windows. We will just be glad if there is no hail. The corn crop is just coming up out of the ground so nicely and we saw farmers preparing their land to plant the beans. This is a great time of year when everything is green, and you can watch the crops grow weekly.

Rain Rain go Away

wow! Has it been raining all day. A good soaking rain. Ran some errands in it and it was really coming down. Thank the Lord for raincoats. Holly is scared of the sound of the rain on the windows even though it isn't thundering this time. Our tulips are out of the ground about an inch since the wind beat them down. The buds are about to pop.
We saw our first Goldfinch yesterday on the seed bag outside the kitchen window and I got the Hummingbird feeder out. They say they come back about Mother's day but last year they were early so I'm ready for them. Going to make home made rice soup tomorrow. That is always good in this weather. Better get organized and off to work.

Friday - T.G.I.F.

It's Friday already. Where has the week gone again? It is time to start thinking of the fish fry tonight. We haven't been there in 3 weeks due to rain, freezing rain and lots of snow. Roads have been terrible. There are ruts in the ice and you better stay in your rut or you will be in the other guy's lane or in the ditch. The snow plows should be out in full force today taking that off the roads as it is really melting. It is supposed to hit 40 today but the wind is going to shift again to NW and that means wind chill ofsets the warmer temperatures. It was beautiful sunshine all morning but now it is completely overcast and the weatherman is saying we could see a little rain. Rain - we don't need it. It will just freeze some more on the roads, causing more accidents. Spring - where are you? Hurry!!
